Thomas “Detour” Evans, Artist

His vibrant murals and public installations explore themes of identity, culture, and human connection, while engaging communities in meaningful dialogue.
Detour’s most recent high-profile commission—a large-scale, suspended sculpture titled It’s Not What You Take, It’s What You Bring Back—was unveiled at Denver International Airport as part of the City of Denver’s Public Art Program. The piece, composed of 183 upcycled bags donated by Colorado residents, was featured nationally on Good Morning America’s First Look, highlighting its powerful message of journey, community, and sustainability.
With a background in both business and fine arts, Detour combines creative storytelling with entrepreneurial savvy. His work frequently incorporates interactive elements like motion, sound, and viewer participation, expanding how audiences experience art. His portfolio includes collaborations with brands and institutions such as Netflix, Red Bull, the NBA, and the U.S. Embassy.
A passionate advocate for accessibility in the arts, Detour mentors emerging creatives and regularly speaks on how to build a sustainable art career. His book Be The Artist offers a practical guide for turning creative passions into lasting professions.
From gallery walls to city streets, Thomas “Detour” Evans continues to reimagine what public art can be—bold, inclusive, and deeply rooted in community.

Lunch
Provided by local Five Points business, Welton Street Cafe
Welton Street Cafe was opened in 1999 by Flynn and Mona Dickerson. The Dickersons, who moved to Colorado in the 1970s from the Virgin Islands, aspired to bring a taste of home stateside. The cafe started by serving island-inspired Southern dishes and continues to be a soul food staple in the Five Points community. Despite hardships, Welton Street Cafe has withstood the test of time and stands as the longest-running and last of its kind restaurant in the area.
The legacy continues as Mona and Flynn, with their four children, Cenya, Chereka, Fathima, and Fathim, continue to own and run all business operations. The Dickerson’s fight and resilience can be attributed to their dedication to family as a core value. Welton Street Cafe is both a place for comfort food and comfortable, community gathering.
