CRAFT Case Study: Steamboat Bike Town USA, Routt County

Steamboat Bike Town USA was awarded a CRAFT Mentor program by the Colorado Tourism Office in winter 2018. The objective of this CRAFT Mentor program was to gain guidance on developing a weekend event to bring different cycling organizations together to showcase Steamboat as a must-ride cycling destination.

Located in Routt County, Steamboat Bike Town USA’s mission is to stimulate economic growth through cycling, engage the community locals and visitors in cycling culture, and promote safe cycling by creating cycling opportunities for beginners, advanced riders, and everything in between.

The Colorado Tourism Office matched Steamboat Bike Town USA with Rich Cook, a CRAFT Mentor with experience in the active-outdoor and tourism industries as well as in consulting with communities, destinations, and non-profit organizations to meet their strategy, development, and sustainability goals. With Cook's guidance, Steamboat Bike Town USA achieved the following outcomes:

  • Created Bicycle Colorado's Bike Summit, which brought influencers and journalists from cycling industry and advocacy groups to the area, and registered 75 attendees in the Summit's first year
  • Hosted a People for Bikes DRAFT, a nationwide meetup series, which attracted 100 attendees and featured speakers from prominent cycling nonprofits
  • Partnered with Routt County Riders to bring Red Bull's North of Nightfall movie to a local outdoor venue for a bike-in movie

"CRAFT Mentor is a simple process. Everyone worked together really well. The program and having a mentor like Rich has paid dividends to our event and future events. Additionally, CTO funding streams and contacts open up to you throughout the process. Just apply and ask questions as you have them." — Amy Charity, Project Lead
