The purpose of the directory is to make it easy for everyone, from novice to experienced recreationists, to find information on avalanche safety training, outdoor recreation guide and outfitter services, and educational materials.

The directory currently contains more than a 100 listings by local organizations offering avalanche safety courses, guided adventures in skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice-climbing, mountaineering, snowmobiling, and ice-fishing.

Avalanche Information and Education
The Colorado Avalanche Information Center is a public safety organization that provides avalanche information and education. CAIC forecasters study our snowpack daily and watch the weather closely in order to provide you with an avalanche forecast tailored to your area. CAIC recommends people traveling in avalanche terrain check the daily forecast at www.colorado.gov/avalanche; get some training (article, online material, evening to multi-day class), and make sure they are prepared (regarding avalanches, carry avalanche transceiver, probe pole, and shovel). The Ski Mountaineering School is intended to develop the skills, attitudes, and awareness needed for ski mountaineering tours, such as 13′er and 14′er ski descents in Colorado and ski traverses and ski mountaineering routes in Europe and Canada. Some of the topics covered include planning and preparation, ski gear and equipment, ski techniques, route finding, and avalanche assessment.

Private Mountain Guiding
If you would like to cover the curriculum from a certain course, but can’t make the course date, or you have your own objective in mind, then booking a private outing is for you. CMS will do exactly what you want to do, when you can do it – they will go ice climbing, snowshoeing, mountaineering, ski touring or splitboarding in Colorado’s high country.
