Blockchain Council

Blockchain Council

The Blockchain Council operated from July 2018 to June 2019. The Council provided legal frameworks to support blockchain technology, recommended potential government use cases of blockchain, and supported innovation alongside customer protection. Members included industry representatives, attorneys, leaders of the government, and elected officials.

Blockchain is a digital ledger that records transactions chronologically and publicly. It can record financial transactions or other records like land titles or medical records. Blockchain operates on a global network of connected computers. The computers verify each other’s transactions and create a shared, unchangeable record. The computers store data in groups, called blocks, and then chain the blocks together. Instead of overwriting or deleting blocks of data, the computers add new blocks to the data. Through blockchain, people can do business with each other from anywhere in the world through a secure, decentralized system.
